During the winter months, however, the body’s vitamin D3 stores are low, increasing the risk of deficiency. Sunscreens also block the body’s ability to make vitamin D3 from sunlight. Vitamin D3 deficiency can contribute to accelerated bone loss and reduced calcium utilization. Recently, research shows higher intakes of vitamin D3 may support overall cellular health.
The international unit (IU) traditionally used to indicate Vitamin D dosage on supplement labels will soon be replaced with micrograms.
